Welcome to Tramadol Home Page
| Tramadol is the generic form of Ultram. This medication is an analgesic that is used to treat or prevent pain. Tramadol's molecular weight is 299.8. Tramadol hydrochloride is a white, non-sweet, scentless and crystalline powder. This can be easily soluble in both water and ethanol with a pKa of 9.41. The n-octanol water coefficient, logP is 1.35 at a pH of 7. ULTRAM pills are white and have 50 mg of Tramadol hydrochloride. Here are the inactive ingredients: wax, corn starch, titanium dioxide, hypromellose, sodium starch glycolate, lactose, polysorbate 80, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, microcrystalline cellulose. Drug Interactions Studies have revealed that Tramadol (Ultram) is not likely to inhibit the CYP3A4-mediated metabolism of other medications when Tramadol (Ultram) is given concurrently at therapeutic doses. Since observed maximal plasma concentrations after multiple oral doses are higher than expected based on single-dose data, it does not appear that Tramadol (Ultram) induces its own metabolism in humans. As measured using animal subjects, Tramadol is a mild inducer of some drug metabolism. Tramadol Storage Tramadol should be stored at 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit); there are exceptions in the range of 15-30 degrees Celsius (59-86 degrees Fahrenheit). Use With Carbamazepine The analgesic effect of ULTRAM may be drastically reduced in those who also take carbamazepine. It is not a good idea to take Ultram and carbamazepine together because Tramadol's metabolism is increased by carbamazepine, and seizure can result. Use With Quinidine Tramadol (Ultram) is metabolized to M1 by CyP2D6. Quinidine selectively inhibits that isoenzyme. For this reason, concomitant administration of quinidine and ULTRAM causes an increase in concentrations of Tramadol (Ultram) and a reduction in concentrations of M1. Today clinical consequences of these findings are not known. It has been shown via in vitro drug interaction studies in human liver microsomes that Tramadol (Ultram) does not affect the metabolism of quinidine. Use With Inhibitors of CYP2D6 It has been shown that the metabolism of Tramadol (Ultram) could be somewhat inhibited when inhibitors of CYP2D6 such as fluoxetine, paroxetine, and amitriptyline are taken concurrently. Use With Cimetidine Utilizing ULTRAM concurrently with cimetidine does not cause clinically significant changes in Tramadol (Ultram) pharmacokinetics. Therefore, there are no changes of the ULTRAM dosage suggested. Use With MAO Inhibitors There have been some reports of interactions with MAO Inhibitors as a result of interference with detoxification mechanisms for some centrally acting drugs (see WARNINGS, Use With MAO Inhibitors). Use With Digoxin and Warfarin Since this drug has come to market, it has been found that on rare occasions, it results in Digoxin toxicity and alteration in the effect of Warfarin, including elevation of prothrombin times. Children Information regarding the effects of Tramadol (Ultram) is limited to patients older than 16 years of age. Precautions for Using Tramadol It is critical to be aware that Tramadol is a narcotic and, like all narcotics, can be habit forming. It is crucial to use this drug as your doctor has prescribed it, and only as your doctor has prescribed it. Don't consume a larger amount than the dosage that is recommended. If you have health problems like liver or kidney disease, be sure to inform your physician. Due to the possibility of Tramadol causing drowsiness, you should not drive until you know how it may affect you. When taking Tramadol, you must never drink alcohol. Let your physician know what else you are taking, both prescription and herbal remedies, like St. John's Wort. Chronic pain is well treated by taking Tramadol. Some side effects can occur, including nervousness, sweating, chills, dry mouth, dizziness, itching, rashes, changes in mood, heartburn, constipation, headache, sleepiness, etc., but normally these symptoms are not severe enough to remove a person from the medication. If you have been thinking about taking Tramadol or your doctor has already written a prescription, then take care to follow their instructions exactly. |
